The Power of Words

I have seen different friends doing this thing over the last few years where instead of setting goals for the New Year, they will pick a word or a couple of words that they want to work on over the year. I decided I wanted to do that this year so here are my words and why I chose them.

The first word I have chosen is: INTENT

this word is defined as:

intent (ɪnˈtɛnt)

— n
1. something that is intended; aim; purpose; design
2. the act of intending
3. law the will or purpose with which one does an act
4. implicit meaning; connotation
5. to all intents and purposes for all practical purposes; virtually

— adj
6. firmly fixed; determined; concentrated: an intent look

See, the reason I chose INTENT as one of my words is that the more I reflect on the last year, the more I am realizing I didn't really have a lot of purpose or focus on any one thing. It was a lot of reacting to life as it was thrown my way or just flitting from one idea/project/event to another. Last year was complete chaos for my family and I would really not like to repeat that. My thought for 2013 and living with INTENT to me means that I will choose to focus on our life, to really strive to maintain peace in my home, to work hard towards the goals we have set for our family instead of letting life get in the way and then just giving up because of the chaos.

The other word I have chosen for the year is: HAPPY

hap·py [hap-ee]
adjective, hap·pi·er, hap·pi·est.
1.
delighted, pleased, or glad, as over a particular thing: to be happy to see a person.
2.
characterized by or indicative of pleasure, contentment, or joy: a happy mood; a happy frame of mind.
3.
favored by fortune; fortunate or lucky: a happy, fruitful land.
4.
apt or felicitous, as actions, utterances, or ideas.
5.
obsessed by or quick to use the item indicated (usually used in combination): a trigger-happy gangster. Everybody is gadget-happy these days.

The reason I chose HAPPY is because I always say that being happy is a choice, but for the last few months I have had a hard time being happy. Things have been difficult, things have been stressful, things haven't been the way I want them. I've had a hard time finding my happy ;) so for this year I am determined to not let my circumstances determine whether I am happy or not. My family is healthy, we have a roof over our heads, we have more than enough food, we have clothes and shoes, we have a nice car, my husband has a good and steady job. We really have nothing to complain about, until we start looking at what other people have and deciding that what we have isn't good enough. That is something we will be working on in 2013.

Happy New Year, friends!

  1. Happy New Years! I think intent is the single most important part of any action (no matter the outcome.)

  2. What a great idea. I love the word "intent." Awesome!

By the way, I was going through my Blogger Reader and noticed you were labeled as a no-reply blogger. Please see my post about how to fix this. It's really easy! Let me know if you have any problems!

  3. How funny, you are the 3rd person {myself included} that has chosen the word intentional for their word of the year. I'm finding it to be such a broad word that has the power to transform so much in our life! Wishing the new year to be the best one yet for you and your family.
